Artist Statement
Freedom of expression is vital for
an artist. According to section 16(1) of
the bill of right states that, everyone has the right to freedom of expression
through artistic creativity. This right is taken away from artists therefore artists
end up frustrated by not getting any opportunity to express themselves freely
in public.
In a democratic country freedom of expression should be
availed and be of vital importance. However in real essence freedom of
expression is not applied. In pragmatic essence it is only viable theoretically.
If it was applied in practice there would have been no situation similar to visual
activitt like Brett Murray “The Spear” whose
artwork was destroyed. Then Conker Gytso, of the “Banned”, who had to leave his country and family because he had no
liberty to express freedom of expression in an artistically.
Therefore the “dove” which is a metaphor of peace which poses
as freedom of expression and the “road” is a metaphor of society. Mark makings
and facial expression are the most significant tools that depict the concept of
frustration in my artwork.
